Talking Your Way to Success
July 2, 2008

by Matthew McKay, Senior Business Development Consultant

In an era characterized by instant messaging and e-mail, utilizing proper speech still matters. In the business world, daily communication toggles between writing and speaking, and reaching the upper echelons requires proficiency in both skills.

Whether you’re a simple job seeker or an individual focused on career advancement, in a tight employment market where employers have their pick of qualified applicants, what you say and how you say it, can make all the difference between getting that dream job or not. Ineffective use of language has the power to tie your feet to the bottom rung of the corporate ladder and stall the growth of your career.

Remember at all times you are selling yourself, and you’re doing it by your words and mannerisms. Here are a few tips for being an interview star:

  • Take the interview process seriously and prepare for it in every aspect.
  • Opt for using the 50 cent word instead of the million dollar word especially if you are really not sure of its meaning.
  • Keep your focus on how you can contribute to the company, rather than on how the company can serve you.
  • Demonstrate confidence, courtesy and professionalism.
  • Be your authentic self.
  • Listen well. Spend at least as much time listening as you talk.

Being able to speak fluently and intelligently builds your confidence in facing the kinds of situations you encounter regularly: whether at the job interview, asking for a raise or for more responsibility. Being prepared and knowing the right thing to say will help you deal effectively with many sensitive issues and will guide you down the path to reaching your full potential.
